William (Bill) Wortel is the Leader of the firm's global Labor and Employment Client Service Group. He has represented management in a variety of litigation at the administrative level, in state and federal courts and in the U.S. Court of Appeals. Mr. Wortel’s lead counsel experience includes defense of wage and hour class actions and defense of actions alleging violations of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Family and Medical Leave Act, the Reconstruction Act of 1866, the Labor Management Relations Act, ERISA and the Illinois Human Rights Act. In addition, Mr. Wortel’s practice includes non-competition and trade secret litigation and defense of class action discrimination claims asserted by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and private litigants. He also has defended employers against claims of retaliatory discharge, breach of contract, defamation, intentional infliction of emotional distress, fraud, negligent retention, negligent supervision, public disclosure of private facts and intrusion upon the seclusion of another.

Mr. Wortel also assists employers in the development, implementation and application of harassment, drug testing and other personnel policies and employee handbooks. Additionally, he has presented client seminars on topics ranging from harassment to proper employee evaluation, discipline and termination in light of state and federal employment laws.

Mr. Wortel is ranked by Chambers USA. A client recently surveyed by Chambers USA stated that Mr. Wortel “has very good business acumen and makes very practical recommendations in a very clear way.” Mr. Wortel also has been repeatedly ranked by Illinois Super Lawyers, and in 2015 was named to its list of the Top 100 Lawyers in Illinois (across all practice areas). Mr. Wortel is also a member of the Board of Editors of The Employment Law Strategist.

William (Bill) Wortel’s litigation practice includes general business and commercial litigation both locally and nationally in a variety of industries. His practice includes defense of employment-related disputes, non-competition and trade secret litigation, and actions arising from shareholder dissonance in the closely-held corporation context. He advises clients on methods of avoiding protracted litigation through proper business planning, negotiation, pursuit of injunctive relief and alternative dispute resolution. His experience encompasses all aspects of the litigation and alternate dispute resolution process, including case strategy, depositions, hearings, trial and appeal.
