Paris Partner Joseph Smallhoover was elected May 22 to serve on the 2016 Democratic National Convention Platform Committee. One of 162 members total, Smallhoover will represent Democrats Abroad (the official Democratic Party committee for U.S. citizens residing outside the United States) on the Platform Committee.
The Platform Committee is one of three standing committees of the 2016 Democratic National Convention (platform, rules and credentials). The Platform Committee is responsible for drafting and recommending a proposed national platform for approval at the Democratic National Convention. Its recommendation is presented as a committee report voted on by the delegates to the Democratic National Convention.
The National Democratic Platform is an official statement of the position of the Democratic Party of the United States on a wide variety of issues. A new National Democratic Platform is adopted every four years by the Democratic National Convention. The 2016 Democratic National Convention will be held July 25-28 in Philadelphia. The Platform Committee will meet prior to the National Convention.
Smallhoover was a delegate from Democrats Abroad to the 1996, 2000, 2004 and 2012 Democratic National Conventions and attended the 2008 National Convention as a Democratic National Committee member elect.
At Bryan Cave, Smallhoover practices in the areas of regulatory compliance affecting multinational businesses and financial institutions; banking and financial law (including issues touching public and private funds ranging from hedge, mutual and offshore funds to non-U.S. investment vehicles) ; corporate law, including mergers and acquisitions (for both financial and strategic buyers and sellers); custom and trade law; anti-corruption; data protection and privacy law; corporate restructurings and insolvency matters; and general commercial law. In addition to speaking English and French, Smallhoover also speaks fluent German and is conversational in Spanish.
