Former U.S. Supreme Court Clerk Joins Litigation Practice in Bryan Cave St. Louis Office

The international law firm Bryan Cave LLP today announced that Barbara A. Smith has joined the firm as an associate in the Commercial Litigation and Appellate Groups. Smith will reside in the St. Louis office.

Smith recently completed a clerkship with United States Supreme Court Justice Samuel A. Alito, Jr. She also previously clerked for Judge Thomas B. Griffith on the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. In addition, she was an appellate litigator at a Washington, D.C.-based law firm, where she represented clients before the United States Supreme Court and other federal courts. Before the United States Supreme Court, Smith has filed petitions for writs of certiorari, merits briefs and amicus briefs. Smith has represented a foreign government in a petition related to a multibillion-dollar sovereign debt dispute; the trustee for the liquidation of Lehman Brothers, in a petition arising out of bankruptcy proceedings; a battlefield support contractor, in a petition arising out of tort claims related to the U.S. military’s combat activities during the war in Iraq; and an individual appealing a criminal conviction for securities fraud.

Smith’s previous experience also includes representing clients in federal courts of appeal and federal district court. She has represented a state challenging the federal government’s funding of the state’s Medicare program; a federal government agency in a billion-dollar rate dispute; and a life insurance trade association in a challenge to the District of Columbia’s assessment of fees to fund its health benefit exchange under the Affordable Care Act.

Smith’s experience encompasses all aspects of litigation and appeals. She litigates matters involving complex business transactions and commercial contract disputes. She has briefed questions of constitutional law, statutory construction, administrative law, labor and employment, white collar crime, bankruptcy and sovereign debt.

Smith received her J.D. in 2012 from Stanford Law School and her B.A., magna cum laude, in 2006 from Wake Forest University.
