New York Partner Mary Beth Buchanan was quoted Jan. 3 by Law360 in response to December’s FIFA trial verdict. After a five-week trial, a federal jury in Brooklyn convicted the former president of the Paraguayan national team and CONMEBOL, and the former Brazilian soccer federation president, of charges including racketeering conspiracy and wire fraud conspiracy. The Eastern District Court of New York devoted considerable time to investigating and producing corroborating evidence. “It really was the classic textbook approach to infiltrating an organized crime operation, but rather than on a local level, this was on an international scale. They couldn’t possibly carry this out without law enforcement partners in other parts of the world,” Buchanan said. The EDNY has prosecuted a number of complex international cases over the last decade. “The international affairs office is extremely knowledgeable on a country-by-country basis. They [know] who are the right people to talk to, and try to help the U.S. work through the international red tape to get the evidence [prosecutors] need to offer in an admissible manner in a U.S. court,” she added.
