Denver, Nov. 21, 2017 – The international law firm Bryan Cave LLP announced that it is joining Social Venture Partnerships (SVP) Denver to further maximize its community impact while gaining access to hands-on training for associates in the Denver business community. The training will focus on leadership, business operations and philanthropy. The first two Bryan Cave associates will start work with SVP Denver in December.
“SVP has a philanthropic model that aligns closely with Bryan Cave’s efforts to innovate how we are training our associates, delivering services to our clients, and impacting our community. SVP Denver not only gives the firm an opportunity to make a positive impact on our community, it also gives our associates an opportunity to have hands-on, operational experience and training that will inform their understanding of how our clients do business in a highly innovative environment,” said Paul Lopach, managing partner of Bryan Cave’s Denver office. “This is not simply providing pro bono legal advice; this is helping to successfully run an entity, from the board room down.”
SVP “investees” are nonprofit organizations that benefit from the experience of partners like Bryan Cave during 12- to 18-month consulting cycles. Bryan Cave and other partner companies provide consulting in their areas of expertise to the investees, in exchange for extensive pro bono experience, industry exposure and leadership training.
“SVP Denver provides a vehicle for professionals to learn about the key issues impacting the community, engage with other professionals in cross-sector work with nonprofit organizations, and cultivate their leadership skills,” said Pat Landrum, Executive Director, SVP Denver. “Legal experience is obviously a crucial consideration for nonprofits and we are extremely pleased to have Bryan Cave aboard.”
Associates will take part in practical training in such areas as board governance, operations and investment selection that will improve their ability to work with clients, other attorneys and other stakeholders in client work. And once a month, the partners come together for leadership training hosted by SVP, called “Leadership Edge.”
Bryan Cave is committed to innovative associate training, with a particular focus on understanding client businesses and operations and providing legal advice and services that reflect an understanding of the client’s objectives. Associates are trained to bring their critical thinking skills to bear on client service issues and business challenges, not just legal issues, and to understand how technology can be used in legal service delivery.
Bryan Cave continues to be a leader of innovative experiential training. The firm is in its second year of partnering with the University of Colorado Law School’s Tech Lawyer Accelerator program, which invites a law student to work half time in Bryan Cave’s office, and the other half at a Bryan Cave client site, to identify and build a technology solution for clients. Bryan Cave Business Academy, which gathers associates from firm offices around the world for two days of training and problem solving, is now in its sixth year, and focuses on operational and business issues impacting clients.
“Bryan Cave is part of the fabric of the Denver business community and the SVP format will give our associates new touch points and networking opportunities that they wouldn’t otherwise have,” said firm Chief Innovation Officer Katie DeBord. “Just like Bryan Cave Business Academy and the CU Tech Accelerator Internship Program, we see this as an innovative way to augment associate training and expand our horizons and be a better firm.”
