Bryan Cave Adopts Mansfield Rule, Joins Pilot to Boost Diversity in Law Firm Leadership

August 23, 2017

St. Louis, Aug. 23, 2017 – The international law firm Bryan Cave LLP announced that it has joined with more than 40 large law firms which have committed to pilot the new “Mansfield Rule” in considering candidates for leadership and governance roles.

The rule is named after Arabella Mansfield, the first woman admitted to practice law in the United States. Inspired by the NFL’s “Rooney Rule,” the Mansfield Rule requires women lawyers and lawyers of color to represent at least 30 percent of the candidate pool for significant law firm leadership roles, including all senior leadership and governance positions, partner and equity partner promotions, and lateral hiring. Firms that successfully pilot the Mansfield Rule over the next year will be designated “Mansfield Certified” and will be invited to send two recently promoted diverse partners to a two-day Client Forum in late 2018 at which more than 50 major corporate law departments will be represented.

“Our adoption of the Mansfield Rule ensures that we remain true to one of our core values: We bring diversity and inclusiveness into every aspect of our work and culture,” said firm Chair Therese Pritchard. “We’re pleased to be a part of this important initiative, which will benefit not only our firm but the legal community as a whole.”

The Mansfield Rule was inspired by the NFL’s highly successful Rooney Rule, named for former Pittsburgh Steelers Chairman Dan Rooney, which requires every NFL team to interview at least one minority candidate for head coach vacancies.

More than 45 legal departments so far have signed on to support the initiative, spanning industries such as technology, retail, health care and media, among others.
