Smith Speaks at Conference on Consumer Finance Class Action & Litigation
July 24, 2012
Chicago Partner Steven Smith will serve as a speaker at American Conference Institute’s 14th National Conference on Consumer Finance Class Action & Litigation.
Smith will address practical implications of recent Supreme Court decisions for consumer finance litigators Monday, July 30, including the impact on case evaluation, motion practice and litigation and settlement strategies. He will cover how these cases actually impact in-house and outside counsel litigators on a day-to-day basis, practical implications of recent Supreme Court precedent and how lawyers use this law in actual litigation. This will include discussion of what happens at the trial court level after a watershed Supreme Court decision, what happens when a trial court declines to follow the Supreme Court and how such cases are used (even when they have been decided very recently), case evaluation, settlement strategy, motion practice and jury selection and communication.
Smith has 30 years of experience in complex commercial litigation matters at trial and appellate levels. His practice focuses on business and commercial disputes in state and federal courts across the country, including serving as lead counsel in numerous class action cases and consolidated multidistrict proceedings.
This event will take place at DoubleTree Chicago – Magnificent Mile, in Chicago, Ill., and will cover defense strategies for in-house and outside counsel on navigating class actions, litigation and government enforcement actions in the consumer finance industry.
