BC Attorney at Summer Institute in Taxation
July 14, 2010
New York Counsel Alan Appel will address international tax issues this month when he takes part in two New York University Summer Institute in Taxation conferences. The events – part of an eight-part summer of taxation programs – are aimed at attorneys and accountants who want to refresh their skills or learn about new developments in legislation and regulation.
Appel will join a panel July 19-21 to present an introduction in international taxation. On completing this program, attendees should have a broad-based foundation in the federal income taxation of cross-border transactions and circumstances, both inbound and outbound.
The second conference, July 22-23, covers advanced international taxation. There Appel will discuss cross-border real estate investing, including partnerships (and other traps and opportunities). On completing this program, attendees will have a more sophisticated knowledge of "hot button" issues and opportunities in international taxation.
Appel focuses his practice in international and domestic tax planning involving taxation of mergers and acquisitions, partnerships, joint ventures, limited liability companies and tax controversy matters. On behalf of the American Bar Association Tax Section, he had primary responsibility for drafting and submitting comments to the U.S. Treasury Department and IRS concerning the scope of the guidance provided by the proposed regulations under Section 1446 of the Internal Revenue Code and also was asked by the Office of the Chief Counsel to train its attorneys on this issue. Widely published on tax matters, Appel is on the Board of Advisors for the Journal of International Taxation and the Journal of Taxation and Regulation of Financial Institutions. He is chair of the American Bar Association Section of Taxation’s U.S. Activities of Foreigners and Tax Treaties Committee and a member of the adjunct tax faculty of the New York Law School.
These taxation programs, presented by NYU’s School of Continuing and Professional Studies, include a national faculty of attorneys, accountants and other taxation professionals. All of the programs take place at the Westin New York at Times Square.
