Dougans Shortlisted for Assistant Solicitor of the Year Award
May 6, 2010
London Associate Robert Dougans has been
shortlisted for this year’s Assistant Solicitor of the Year award by
The Lawyer. Dougans practices in the firm’s Commercial Litigation Client Service Group.
Dougans has been in the spotlight recently with his representation of Dr. Simon Singh in a groundbreaking English libel case. The British Chiropractic Association (BCA) sued Singh after he wrote an opinion piece in
The Guardian in April 2008 criticizing the BCA for claiming chiropractic care could help treat childhood conditions such as colic, ear infections and feeding problems. Singh called the BCA’s claims “bogus” and without “a jot of evidence” to support them. The matter was brought to an end by the BCA in April after a ruling by England’s most senior judges that Singh had the right to use the defense of “fair comment.”
The case has been listed by
The Lawyer as
one of the top 10 to watch in 2010 and has been widely reported in the national and international media, including the
Financial Times,
The Times,
BBC,
The Independent,
The Guardian,
The Wall Street Journal,
The Daily Mail and
Bloomberg Business Week.
Dougans also was featured April 22 in
The Times as the publication’s
Lawyer of the Week and on April 26 in
The Lawyer as one of the “most talented and promising legal practitioners at work today”.
Dougans practices a wide range of litigation and arbitration, usually with an international focus, together with his well-known focus upon media work.
The Lawyer awards ceremony will take place Tuesday, June 22.
