Michael Shumaker focuses his practice on financial institutions, with an emphasis on regulatory compliance, mergers and acquisitions, and securities law issues. In particular, Mr. Shumaker advises his financial institution and private equity clients in relation to mergers and acquisitions, control investments in bank holding companies, capital raising transactions for public and privately-traded companies, branch sales and acquisitions, and regulatory matters. Other experience includes SEC reporting advice for companies traded on the Nasdaq Stock Market, going-private transactions, director and officer liability insurance matters, real estate-secured lending, and problem loan workouts.
Mr. Shumaker’s practice is primarily focused in the Carolinas and in Georgia.
Prior to attending law school, Mr. Shumaker served as Senior Legislative Assistant for U.S. Congressman Kenny Hulshof, a member of the U.S. House Committee on Ways and Means. In this capacity, Mr. Shumaker advised the Congressman on matters relating to trade, agriculture, transportation, energy, defense and the environment.
During law school, Mr. Shumaker was the Chair of the UNC School of Law Honor Court and a Note and Comment Editor for the North Carolina Journal of International Law and Commercial Regulation.
