Irvin (Irv) Belzer has 30 years of legal experience focusing primarily in business disputes and complex commercial litigation. Mr. Belzer’s experience includes representation of lenders in all manner of disputes, companies in corporate litigation and various entities and individuals in real estate litigation. He has tried numerous cases in Kansas and Missouri, in state and federal courts and in arbitrations throughout the country. He served as managing partner of the firm’s Kansas City office from 1999 through 2005 and as co-leader of the commercial litigation practice from 2001 to 2005.
His work for lenders has included cases involving major collections, disputes over lien priority, alleged fiduciary relationships, alleged joint ventures, and disputes among participants in loans. Real estate disputes in which he has been involved include dissolution of real estate partnerships, disputes over leases, easements and encroachments, mechanic’s lien suits, commission disputes and various other contractual issues. Other commercial litigation which he has handled include disputes in telecommunications industry, insurance coverage disputes, bankruptcy litigation and corporate litigation involving mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, partnerships and a wide variety of contractual controversies. For the past four years, he has been named in Chambers U.S.A., America’s Leading Lawyers For Business, as one of Missouri’s top commercial litigators. He serves on the Union Bank Advisory Board and the BKD Public Interest Council.
Mr. Belzer is the counsel to and a board member of the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce, a board member of Kansas City Area Development Council, a board member of the Jewish Community Foundation, University of Missouri-Kansas City Law School Foundation and of the Jewish Community Relations Bureau/American Jewish Committee. He served two terms as chairman of the board of The Learning Exchange, Inc. He is past president of the Board of Jewish Family and Children Services and recipient, with his wife, Sue McCord-Belzer, of the Alfred Benjamin Friend of the Family Award from that organization in 2000. He was appointed by the Missouri Supreme Court to serve on its Regional Lawyers’ Disciplinary Committee.
